Mastering "Sum and Difference" Word Problems Using the Unit Method

1

The Golden Rule: Make the Units Equal!

Why can't we just divide the sum in half right away?

💡 The Singapore Math Secret:

In a Sum & Difference problem, the two items are unequal. We cannot divide by 2 because one item has more than the other!

To solve it, we must first make both bars identical in length. There are two ways to do this:

Strategy A (Most Popular) ✂️

Cut Away the Difference

Subtract the difference ($D$) from the total sum ($S$). This leaves 2 equal smaller units!

2 Units = Sum − Difference
1 Unit (Smaller Item) = (Sum − Difference) ÷ 2
👉 Great for finding the smaller item first, then adding the difference to find the larger item.
Strategy B (Fast Shortcut) ➕

Add the Difference

Add the difference ($D$) to the total sum ($S$). This gives 2 equal larger units!

2 Large Units = Sum + Difference
1 Large Unit (Larger Item) = (Sum + Difference) ÷ 2
👉 Perfect when the question specifically asks: "How much does the larger item have?"

The 4 'S' Problem Solving Framework

Memorize this checklist for every test problem!

S1

SEE the Numbers

Underline the Sum (total) and the Difference (how many more/fewer). Identify who has more.

S2

SKETCH the Bars

Draw two bars starting from the same left baseline. The longer bar has a dashed box at the end labeled with the difference.

S3

SUBTRACT the Extra

Deduct the difference from the total sum:
Total − Difference = Equal Units

S4

SOLVE & Check

Divide to find 1 unit. Re-read the question: did it ask for the smaller item, larger item, or something in the future?

The 5 Core Grade 4 Archetypes

Every Sum and Difference question is a variation of these 5 patterns:

Type 1 · Standard 2-Item Foundational

"A and B collected 540 items altogether. A collected 80 fewer than B."

Model Concept: $B$ has 80 more than $A$. If you remove 80 from 540, you are left with two of $A$'s units.

A (Liam): 1 unit (?) B (Emma): 1 unit +80 Total: 540
• $2\text{ units} = 540 - 80 = 460$
• $1\text{ unit (A)} = 460 \div 2 = \mathbf{230\text{ items}}$
• $\text{Item B} = 230 + 80 = \mathbf{310\text{ items}}$
Type 2 · Three Quantities (Cascading) Intermediate

"Three classes folded 750 cranes. 4B folded 35 more than 4A. 4C folded 50 more than 4B."

Model Concept: Relate everything to the smallest quantity (Class 4A = 1 unit). Class 4B = $1\text{u} + 35$. Class 4C = $1\text{u} + 35 + 50 = 1\text{u} + 85$.

4A: 1 u (?) 4B: +35 4C: +35 +50 Total: 750
• Total extra parts $= 35 + (35 + 50) = 120$
• $3\text{ equal units} = 750 - 120 = 630$
• $1\text{ unit (Class 4A)} = 630 \div 3 = \mathbf{210\text{ cranes}}$
Type 3 · Geometry / Perimeter Integration Common Exam Topic

"The perimeter of a garden is 180 m. The length is 18 m longer than the width."

Model Trap: Perimeter $= 2\text{ lengths} + 2\text{ widths} = 180\text{ m}$. You must first divide by 2 to find 1 length + 1 width = 90 m!

• $\text{Sum of 1 Length + 1 Width} = 180 \div 2 = 90\text{ m}$
• $2\text{ widths} = 90 - 18 = 72\text{ m} \implies \text{Width} = 72 \div 2 = \mathbf{36\text{ m}}$
• $\text{Length} = 36 + 18 = \mathbf{54\text{ m}}$ (or $(90 + 18) \div 2 = 54\text{ m}$)
Type 4 · Internal Transfer (Equalizing) High Heuristic Value

"Total 320 tokens. After Nathan gives 45 tokens to Oliver, they become equal."

Conservation of Total Principle: When items pass between two people, the Total is unchanged!

• In the end, both are equal: each has $320 \div 2 = \mathbf{160\text{ tokens}}$.
• Nathan gave away 45, so at first: $160 + 45 = \mathbf{205\text{ tokens}}$.
• Oliver received 45, so at first: $160 - 45 = \mathbf{115\text{ tokens}}$.
• Pro-Tip: Original difference $= 2 \times 45 = 90\text{ tokens}$!
Type 5 · Multiple Units + Single Offset Challenging

"2 identical basketballs and 1 soccer ball cost $195. The soccer ball costs $15 more than 1 basketball."

Replacement Model: Treat 1 basketball as 1 unit. Soccer ball is $1\text{ unit} + \$15$. Total is $3\text{ units} + \$15$.

• $3\text{ units} = \$195 - \$15 = \$180$
• $1\text{ unit (1 Basketball)} = \$180 \div 3 = \mathbf{\$60}$
• $1\text{ Soccer ball} = \$60 + \$15 = \mathbf{\$75}$

Top 4 Traps Grade 4 Students Fall Into

Watch out for these common test mistakes!

⚠️ Trap 1: Dividing Before Subtracting

Mistake: Doing $540 \div 2 = 270$ first, then adding 80.

✔️ Fix: Always subtract the extra difference before dividing by 2: $(540 - 80) \div 2 = 230$!

⚠️ Trap 2: Stopping at 1 Unit

Mistake: Finding 1 unit = 230, and writing 230 as the answer when the question asked: "How much did Emma have?"

✔️ Fix: Re-read the last sentence! Emma had $230 + 80 = 310$.

⚠️ Trap 3: The Perimeter Illusion

Mistake: Treating Perimeter (180 m) as Length + Width.

✔️ Fix: Perimeter $= 2 \times (\text{Length} + \text{Width})$. Halve it first: $180 \div 2 = 90\text{ m}$!

⚠️ Trap 4: Internal Transfer Halving

Mistake: Thinking Nathan had 45 more than Oliver at first because he gave 45.

✔️ Fix: Giving 45 means the initial gap was $2 \times 45 = 90$! Always work backwards from the equal state.

Sam and Max have 84 marbles in total. Sam has 16 more than Max. How many does Max have?

Solution
• Max = 1 unit, Sam = 1 unit + 16
• $2\text{ units} = 84 - 16 = 68$
• $1\text{ unit (Max)} = 68 \div 2 = \mathbf{34\text{ marbles}}$
• Check: Sam $= 34 + 16 = 50$. Total $= 50 + 34 = 84$ ✅
Answer: 34 marbles
Card 2 · Geometry

A rectangle has a perimeter of 60 cm. Its length is 6 cm longer than its width. What is the length?

Solution
• Length + Width $= 60 \div 2 = 30\text{ cm}$
• $2\text{ widths} = 30 - 6 = 24\text{ cm}$
• Width $= 12\text{ cm}$
• Length $= 12 + 6 = \mathbf{18\text{ cm}}$
Answer: 18 cm
Card 3 · Transfer

Leo and Maya have 100 stickers. Leo gives 15 stickers to Maya and they become equal. How many did Leo have at first?

Solution
• Total stays 100 stickers!
• In the end: $100 \div 2 = 50$ each
• Leo gave 15, so before giving:
